Sharing ChatGPT transcripts!
I was happy to receive notice a few days back that ChatGPT now allows you to share transcripts. See my screenshot below, with the indication bubble. This makes it easier, and also safer, to share conversations.
Prior to this, there were other websites and plugins for sharing such transcripts.
You could copy / paste the next, editing Your Name: and ChatGPT: at the start of each exchange. This was tediuos.
There were Chrome Plugins, for example GPT Best. A screenshot:
The big drawback that people don’t realize is that, in order to share the content, the plugin needs access to read / write the webpage. But, there might be data I want kept private. I generally dissuade people from installing plugins as a general rule, because of how access you grant. For instance, here are the permissions for Grammarly, a popular and free grammar checker:
Read and change your data on all websites. In other words, give away all of your privacy. What if you store credit card / password data somewhere, or type it into a form? What if you have private medical information?
So the reason that I liked GPT Best is that they had a manual option. Basically, you would open a JavaScript Console (F12), run a command to copy the document’s HTML to the clipboard, and paste that into
However, this was not really doable for the less tech-savvy users. So this is a good development.
I hope, though, that they plan on retaining these transcripts for a while. Each time you share a transcript, it isn’t the full and dynamic log, only the log until that point. If they are storing these as HTML somewhere, then it could be good for shares of short duration. But what if some blogger decided to create a share and link to it? Would that exist a year or two down the line?
Anyway, I probably will make use of this new feature extensively.
